Silence Doesn't Work Here

O Canada

Happy Canada Day!

Holidays don’t mean much to the unemployed. It’ll be just another day without work for me. I’ve got some promising leads for things to follow-up on later in the week, though, so that’s positive.

Tonight I’m having some friends over for a bbq and thankfully the weather is cooperating. I’ve been cleaning up my apartment all day today getting ready for my guests. I’ve also been busy posting photos from the past month on my facebook account. If you haven’t checked out my page, it’s right here. If you see yourself in one of the shots, please tag yourself. You can add me as a friend if you’d like to… I’m always looking to ‘network’ with people who might have a job lead. Preferably a safe job.

Well, I should get back to my prep work. I’ll leave you with the video that CBC used to play at the end of the broadcast day. Still makes me proud to be a Canadian.

Moonwalking

From the King of Mime to the King of Pop

Everywhere you turn the past few days there’s something being written about the passing of Michael Jackson. I was born well after Thriller was released, but I still understand the impact he’s had on pop music.

What a lot of people might not know is that his famous moonwalk was inspired by the King of Mime - Marcel Marceau. I came across this article today that explained what a big fan Michael Jackson was of Marcel Marceau from the time he was an early teenager. It’s pretty amazing how one person can inspire another.

Here’s a short video on how to learn the moonwalk in the comfort of your own home.

Lazy Friday

Prepping for a date tonight and finding an ideal job.

Today’s been a slow day. Still not feeling 100% so I’ve been taking it easy at home and getting things ready for my big date tonight. I’m cooking dinner for us here and then we’re going to see a movie. Not a lot of people know I’m a great cook. But I digress.

I was surfing around today and found this cool video of guys carrying around an incredibly clean pane of glass. Or so it seems. (The first few seconds are boring, but stay with it.)

Now that’s a job I think I’d be great at.

Insult to Injury

No good deed goes unpunished.

One of my neighbours is moving out of the building soon. Today she asked me for help taking boxes down to a truck. Not having much better to do, I was happy to lend a hand.

Turns out this neighbour has a lot of stuff. A lot of heavy stuff. On one of the trips down the stairs I aggravated my already hurt back. It seems no matter what I do I end up in pain.

To make matters worse, as the neighbour was explaining what happened to my landlady, she referred to me as “that quiet boy down the hall”. She didn’t even know my name.

Double bummer.

The Humidity

It’s not the heat.

Life in my apartment is torture. It’s incredibly humid and I feel like I have no energy. Job searching under these conditions isn’t much fun.

I wonder if there’s fewer jobs in tourism this year because fewer visitors are in town. It seems that way. Not a lot to see here lately through the fog.

The humidity got so bad I broke down and bought a fan. The cashier said they’d be sold out in a couple of days. I set it up but it blows away my origami creatures. My favourite is my badger. Small price to pay for relief.

Here’s Silence

Thoughts on Ed McMahon passing away.

Well here I am, a man in my twenties. All day I’ve been thinking of things I did back when I was a teenager. Birthdays make me even more introspective than usual, but at least I have leftover cake to keep me distracted.

Ed McMahon passed away today. I’m too young to remember him, but my folks used to go on about what a great sidekick he was whenever his commercials would come on tv. He always knew just what to say. Maybe I can be a little more like Ed this year. I’m sure my new love interest would appreciate it. I’m beginning to think she finds me dull. We have another date on Friday so that should clear things up. Until then I’m back on the job hunt.

Happy Birthday to Me

Celebrating twenty years old today…

Hey again. Sorry for the lack of posts recently. I had a few days worth of shifts working as a server at one of the hotels. It was good to get out and make a few dollars, but by the end of the weekend things weren’t so great. I pulled my back lifting those big serving trays over and over again. I wasn’t really sure about how to properly lift them. Definitely should have asked my boss about this.

As a result, I’m celebrating my birthday at home. On the plus side I met a girl on the job and she’s helping me celebrate tonight. We’re having some cake and watching a Blue Man Group DVD.

Feeling pretty good about 20.

Serving up a Job

Tomorrow’s a big day.

Well my patient readers I have good news to report. A friend has set me up with a job for the next couple of days. It’s not permanent but I’m happy to be getting out of the apartment and making some money. I’ll be doing some banquet serving and I think it should be an okay job. I don’t really have to talk much to the guests so I should be fine.

I’ll report back tomorrow on how it goes. In the meantime, if you see a pale-faced and daper young server tomorrow, feel free to tip generously.

The Mime Diet

Jack Black discovers my secret to staying trim.

A lot of people ask me how I stay so trim, especially given that you won’t often see me in a loud gym or out running in the park. Jack Black has discovered my secret. While out promoting his latest film “Year One” he appeared on Friday Night with Jonathan Ross last week. Herein lies the secret to my success.

I read yesterday that Jack picked up a nasty bug in London. This is a good reminder to be certain that your food has been properly prepared while following the mime diet. Don’t take chances with your health.

Phone Interview

Well today was the day…

Well today was the day. My big phone interview. Going into it I was pretty nervous and maybe that carried over to the interview.

I tried my best to make use of the “pregnant pause” and to let the silence work for me. In the end I don’t think they really got me. There was a lot of “speak up” and “are you even there?” comments thrown my way. Kind of upsetting, really.

Looking for the silver lining the past few hours I’ve realized that perhaps working at a call center wasn’t the right job for me anyway.

Until next time, the search continues…

Silence

About Me

I've never been much of a talker. That makes relationships tricky for me. One of my exes put it best. She said it just takes a long time to get comfortable with me. Libraries and movie theatres are my favourite places to hang out. I live in an apartment downtown, and I think I make an excellent neighbour. I find my biggest challenge lately is a job. I just can't seem to keep one.
