Silence Doesn't Work Here

DJ Mime

Taking silence to the airwaves

Fun news to share today. 101.3 The Bounce is going to be running a contest starting Tuesday hosted by DJ Mime.

DJ Mime will let his music do his talking and will mix together a little montage each day to get his message out. Identify the message and the songs it’s hidden in and win $50. Cool, no? Even better is that the pot grows each day that the correct answer isn’t given.

Contest details are here with more info to follow. Photos from DJ Mime’s time as an Intern at the Bounce are on Facebook.’

**UPDATE** DJ Mime will also be on air in Sydney! Tune in to MAX-FM 98.3 for your chance to win $50 in gift certificates for Mayflower Mall.

Arbeitsplatzsicherheitsvideo

Old safety video with some international flavour.

For those of you who enjoyed my earlier post of a gruesome safety video, you’ll love this. And if you hated it, just watch the first 4 minutes or so. Because after that things get hairy.

This 80s-looking German safety video is somehow reminiscent of Sam Raimi (think Evil Dead, not Spiderman).

Language barrier aside, there’s a pretty clear story here.

Mime after Mime

Another big weekend

Well it was another big weekend in HRM. On Saturday, Dartmouth was host to Akon and the rest of the performers at the Summer Rush concert. Meanwhile on the Halifax side of the harbour Pride festivities were in full gear. And in honour of that, here’s a little Cyndi Lauper-inspired parody, “Mime after Mime”.

Sadly, I sometimes have the same difficulties with the ladies that is on display here.

Tall Ships and KISS Army

A weekend filled with fire and water.

The new job has been going well. I like my coworkers and have appreciated the air conditioned environment on the hot days we’ve been having.

Most of my shifts don’t start until later in the day, so I’ve been able to get out and enjoy my mornings. I checked out the Tall Ships and the huge crowds that were on hand for those. I’ve posted some photos of some of my fellow mimes out enjoying themselves on the waterfront on my Facebook page.

I also checked out KISS on the weekend. It was wet and wild, and you’ve got to love a band with great face paint. And explosions. Lots of explosions.

Before I go I’ll share a video I found about workplace safety in the United States up until the 1920s. Pretty intense and interesting stuff. Really makes you think about how things have changed.

Movie Magic

And now, our Feature Presentation

Big news. I’ve got a job with my local movie theatre. It’s not completely ideal (I think being a projectionist would be fun), but it’ll be nice to be employed again. I’ll be taking tickets and serving food to moviegoers starting tomorrow night.

One nice thing about the job is that I’ll have my mornings free and the evenings aren’t too late for a night owl like me.

Oh, and all the popcorn I can eat. A nice little bonus, but I’ll have to watch myself. Horizontal stripes do nothing to hide a pot belly.

Harry Potter and the Quest for Work

A night at the movies leads to a job opportunity

Last night I went to a screening of the new Harry Potter film with Serena. The movie itself was just okay - some fun moments but mostly nothing special. The experience wasn’t helped any by the talkative people next to me. I’m not sure what was worse, their inane commentary or their volume.

I really do love the movies, though, and it got me to thinking that it would be a fun place to work. It’s also the type of place where they are often hiring young people. After a brief investigation, I have a meeting with my local theatre manager tomorrow to talk about a position. It won’t be a glamorous job but at least I’ll be around something I love. Oh, and there’s the popcorn benefit.

I’ll leave you with a fun clip of Alan Rickman’s answering machine. Rickman plays Severus Snape in the Harry Potter films (and older folks will remember him from Die Hard and Robin Hood). Such a great villain.

Back to the Future

Home after a weekend in the country.

This weekend Serena, a couple of friends and myself all headed outside of the city for a camping adventure. It was nice to get away from the hustle and the bustle. I quite enjoyed the quiet evenings and being able to look up and see all the stars in the night sky.

But the bugs. There’s never been a more accurately named group of creatures. All this damp weather had them out in droves and Saturday’s sun didn’t drive them away. I’m sure I provided enough nourishment for a few generations of the little beasts. Here I was trying to avoid Beatle-fever and ended up getting hit with mosquitoes and black flies.

Now I’m back in the city and settling into the job hunting groove again. I felt a bit disconnected without Twitter of Facebook all weekend, but it probably did me some good.

Sometimes you need to unplug to get recharged.

Little Shop of Horrors

Not for the faint of heart

I discovered this absolutely gruesome workplace safety video today. It’s quite extreme so you may not want to watch it if you’re easily upset by gore.

Like I said, pretty intense stuff. It’s all a bit too much, but I wonder if workers seeing the video would take safety seriously after seeing the hazards of their workplace. I think I’d be extra alert after seeing this. I hope I never work in a place with so many dangers. I seem to have enough troubles with jobs that I assume are safe.

Here Comes the Sun

It’s all right

Finally a day where my face doesn’t wash away in the rain. The sun has returned to Halifax.

I was out and about today trying to soak it up as best I could. I guess that the nice thing about not having a job is that I’m free to get outside as much as I want to.

I stopped by the Common and things are really coming along for the big Paul McCartney concert on Saturday. People all over town are playing Beatles and Wings songs and there’s a really fun atmosphere in the city.

There also seems to be a lot of buskers and musicians out performing for the tourists and passersby. If things get rough I might have to break out my mime act to earn a few dollars, but I prefer not to put myself on display like that. Maybe driving a rickshaw would be a good gig. I’d definitely get in shape. Some of the cargo they haul combined the the hills downtown would push me to my limits. Something to think about…

Alright. For all you Macca fans out there, here’s my favourite Paul song. He’s performing it here with the same band he’ll be playing with this Saturday. Very cool.

Shhh

Be very quiet. I’m hunting for a job.

I like to read. That probably doesn’t come as much of a surprise. It’s a pretty quiet activity. I also like to read at the library because it’s slightly more social and the staff there are always friendly.

They always say that you should ‘do what you love’ so I asked my favourite librarian if there were any available jobs there. Turns out no such luck. You need an education in it, etc. (along with a very hushed natural speaking voice).

Not to fear, though. Instead of some work I was pointed in the direction of some resources for job hunters like myself. I’ll be paying particular attention to any details on actually keeping the job once you’ve got it. That seems to be my weakness.

Silence

About Me

I've never been much of a talker. That makes relationships tricky for me. One of my exes put it best. She said it just takes a long time to get comfortable with me. Libraries and movie theatres are my favourite places to hang out. I live in an apartment downtown, and I think I make an excellent neighbour. I find my biggest challenge lately is a job. I just can't seem to keep one.
