Only a few more shifts before the adventure in the great outdoors.
Today was a tease. I was out at lunch and it was hot and sunny. But now that I’m writing this it looks gray and very much like fall again. My blast of summer was short, but hopefully it’ll hit again for the camping trip with Ted. He’s really excited about it and picked up a few things from MEC today so we can do some outdoor cooking. He’s the cook, so I’ll leave that stuff to him. I’m just worried about staying warm.
Some classmates were talking about Halloween today. I can’t believe that’s coming up in just a month. I think I feel the same way this polar bear does about it.

Off to work I go. Only a few more shifts before the adventure in the great outdoors. Still looking for suggestions on where to go.

I need to get myself a day planner or something. These work and school schedules are getting too much to keep track of.
So it’s 10 minutes to 2 this afternoon. I’d just finished an assignment and had a late lunch and I realize I’m going to be late for class. So I start booking it, running like mad towards campus. I’m pretty fast and I was making good time. But with today’s rain, the ground was slick in spots. I was almost to the door when
BAM
Down I went. And Hard. Thankfully I landed on my rear and my book bag broke the worst of the fall. I felt just like Conan O’Brien, but thankfully I didn’t hit my head.
So I collect myself and my stuff and move into class. And there’s no one there.
I’m an hour early for class. It’s tomorrow that I have class at 2.

Seems most people I know were busy with school and/or work. In fact, it seemed like everybody was working for the weekend.
Another weekend in the books. It was a busy one. Trying to stay on top of school while managing a job can be tricky. I’ve had to cut down on my Si-time just to get everything done. I’ll keep the blog updated, so don’t go anywhere. There just might be a few late night updates like this one.
I’m not alone in working hard, though. Seems most people I know were busy with school and/or work. In fact, it seemed like everybody was working for the weekend.
Yeah, there we go. Guilty pleasure.
In other news, Ted wants to do some male bonding this weekend. It’s going to be October and he wants to go camping. I’m freezing already. I guess if it’s dry we’ll give it a go. Anyone know of any good fall camping spots? A provincial park perhaps?

School’s going well, work’s going well, what else could I ask for? According to Ted, I’m missing a love life.
Wow. What a week. Started my new job, managed classes and homework and snuck in enough sleep to keep me going. The exciting life of a busy/starving student.
Ted continues to keep me entertained at work. His time in Alberta has given him lots of stories and I think he’s just been waiting for someone to listen to him. There’s nothing else for me to do while scrubbing dishes, so I’m his captive audience. It seems he’s quite the ladies man. I’m getting his version of how the west was won.
For all the good things in my life right now, Ted still thinks I’m missing something: a lady. He doesn’t think my quiet ways are doing me any favours in that department. He might be right, but I’m just not a natural like he is. Seems like there’s a lot going on in the city this weekend, lots of bands playing, Louis CK is in town too. I’ll probably catch the end of the film fest and enjoy some good cinema. You never know where you’ll meet your leading lady.

It seems like I’ve made a new friend in our cook, Ted.
My first shift at the restaurant is in the history books. Last night I rocked it as dishwasher extraordinaire. I honestly don’t think I’ve ever seen so many plates in my life. They just kept coming. But from pots and pans to knives and forks, I made quick work of dirty dishes. Once I got into a rhythm things sailed along, and the rest of the staff were helpful as I learned the ropes.
It’s a pretty crazy environment behind-the-scenes at a busy restaurant, but the staff seem to take it all in stride. Everyone’s very friendly. One guy was especially nice and talked my ear off all evening. His name is Ted and he’s one of the cooks. He just came back from working in Fort McMurray. The jobs dried up and so he’s back home. He was only there a couple of years, but he sure seems to have a lot of stories. He’s what my grandmother would call ‘a real character’. Anyway, he seems like a nice guy and it’s good to have someone to pass the time with.
Back at it tonight. Here’s what my fingers will look like.

I met a few of my co-workers and everyone seems really nice. One of the cooks was especially friendly and the owner reminds me of a miniature Gordon Ramsey.
Yesterday I checked out my new workplace for the first time. It’s a pretty standard restaurant that mostly serves Canadian food. Nothing too spicy or different. It’s not far from home – another advantage of living close to downtown.
I was in to get a tour and fill out the necessary paperwork. I met a few of my co-workers and everyone seems really nice. One of the cooks was especially friendly.
The owner reminds me of a miniature version of Gordon Ramsey. He takes things quite seriously and has a passion for what he does. And he’s loud. But there’s nothing wrong with expecting high quality and I’m that’s what he’ll get from me. My first shift is tonight and I’m feeling good about it.

I got a call over the weekend from the restaurant folks offering me a job.
Here’s a little morning update for you before I head off to class. On Friday I had an interview with the pizza place looking for a delivery guy. They seemed like nice people, but it seemed a bit stressful. If I was late delivering I’d have to pay for the pizza myself. I’m usually pretty prompt, but I’m not sure how well my scooter would perform in winter conditions.
Thankfully I got a call over the weekend from the restaurant folks offering me a job. I’m going in today to get shown around and sign the paperwork and my first shift will be tomorrow. The old bank account was really hurting, so this comes at a good time.
So I’m pretty happy to be employed again, even if it is as a dishwasher. It’s something I’m used to doing, so the learning curve shouldn’t be steep. Seventeen years at Mom’s sink is finally paying off.

Success. After a brief search and your input, the interviews are lining up.
Thanks for voting on my poll about which jobs I should apply for over on my Facebook page. Today I had an interview with a restaurant that’s looking for a dishwasher. Things seemed to go well, so I’m thinking I may hear back from them. It’s not a glamorous job, but it seems like it’ll work well with my school schedule. I just hope I don’t end up with dishpan hands.
The job that won out on the poll was for a pizza delivery job. I might as well apply, it sounds pretty flexible too. I wonder if I’d lose my fondness for pizza if I was around it all the time. Only one way to find out, I guess.

I’ve got a few job leads. Vote on my Facebook page for which you think I’d be best at.
In between classes and my noisy apartment-dwelling I’ve found the time to find a few job leads. I have a few options that I think might be good for me.
Check out my Facebook page – I’ve got a poll up asking which job you think I should apply for. The poll is just below my friends list. I’m curious to know what other people think I’d be good at.
I’ve actually applied for one already. And have an interview lined up. But I don’t want to spoil the voting. I’ll let you know how it goes tomorrow.
Hopefully it’ll go better than this interview. Classic.

I’m not really sure how I’ll confront the noisy neighbour. He’s a really big guy, so getting physical definitely isn’t an option. Maybe I’ll leave him a note in the hopes he’ll know how to read it. Neanderthal. Who listens to Kanye West anymore, anyway?
First it was the construction noise and now it’s the noisy neighbour. Since I’ve moved I’ve noticed that the guy next door is pretty loud. It didn’t bother me until last night when he started blasting music late at night. Did I mention it was Monday?
I’m not really sure how I’ll confront him about it if it continues. He’s a really big guy, so getting physical definitely isn’t an option. Maybe I’ll leave him a note in the hopes he’ll know how to read it. Neanderthal. Who listens to Kanye West anymore, anyway?
If I was less of an art nerd and more technical maybe I’d be able to build something like this. It’s hard to hear, but it seems like the perfect tool. I wonder if he’d build one for me.
Things are moving along on the job front. It seems a lot of places are hiring for part-time student positions. Hopefully I’ll have an update tomorrow.

I've never been much of a talker. That makes relationships tricky for me. One of my exes put it best. She said it just takes a long time to get comfortable with me. Libraries and movie theatres are my favourite places to hang out. I live in an apartment downtown, and I think I make an excellent neighbour. I find my biggest challenge lately is a job. I just can't seem to keep one.
